Why I Chose the Seiko Presage Blue Moon

I've always thought it's worth having a good dress watch in your collection, even if, like me, you spend most of your time wearing sports and tool watches. Sometimes you just want something a little smarter on the wrist, don't you?

The thing is, I didn't want to spend a fortune on a watch that might only come out for special occasions. So I started looking at the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time collection, and that's when the Blue Moon SRPB41J1 caught my eye.

It's a watch that manages to look smart without feeling too formal, and that stunning blue dial gives it loads of character. Seiko has continued to expand the collection over the years, including the newer Presage Cocktail Time GMT models, but there's still something about the simplicity of the original Blue Moon that I really enjoy.

Seiko Blue Moon Case, Size and Bracelet

The Seiko Presage Blue Moon has a 40.5mm stainless steel case and measures 11.8mm thick. That might sound a little large for a dress watch, but I've always found it sits nicely on the wrist. The polished case gives it a lovely, smart finish, while the box-shaped Hardlex crystal adds a little character without making the watch feel too bulky. It also slips comfortably under a shirt cuff, which is exactly what I want from a watch like this.

The SRPB41J1 comes supplied on a stainless steel bracelet with a push-button deployment clasp. I think it suits the polished case really well, and the overall quality is good for the money. That said, I found the bracelet a little awkward to adjust, and I've always preferred wearing this watch on leather anyway.

With a standard 20mm lug width, changing the strap is straightforward, and it's one of the things I really enjoy about the Blue Moon. On the bracelet, it has a slightly smarter, more polished look. Swap that for a leather strap, as I've done in some of my photographs, and it takes on a completely different character.

That Stunning Seiko Blue Moon Dial

Let's be honest, the real reason you'd buy the Seiko Presage Blue Moon is that dial! It's an absolute beauty, and for me, it's what makes this watch stand out from so many others at this price.

The deep blue sunray dial has a lovely textured finish that really comes alive when the light hits it. Depending on the angle, the blue changes in tone, and the way the light catches those fine lines across the dial is quite mesmerising. It's one of those watches you find yourself looking at even when you don't need to know the time!

The Blue Moon gets its name from the cocktail that inspired it, and you can see how Seiko has carried that idea through the design. The slim, highly polished hour markers are shaped to evoke the stems of cocktail glasses, while the elegant hands complement the dial without stealing the show.

I've had plenty of people ask me about this watch, and it's nearly always the dial that catches their attention first. That's what I love about the Presage collection. Seiko knows how to make an interesting dial, whether it's the rich blue of this Cocktail Time or the warm, textured finish of the Presage Classic Shiracha.

Seiko 4R35 Automatic Movement

Inside the Seiko Presage Blue Moon is the familiar 4R35 automatic movement. It's a movement you'll find in plenty of Seiko watches, and while it's not particularly fancy, it's a sensible choice for a watch at this price.

You get approximately 41 hours of power reserve, 23 jewels, manual winding and hacking seconds, which allows you to stop the second hand when setting the time. It's everything you really need from an everyday automatic watch, although the power reserve does mean you may need to reset it if you leave it unworn for a couple of days.

Turn the watch over, and you'll find a see-through caseback that gives you a view of the movement. There's not much decoration to admire, and personally, I've always felt display casebacks are a little unnecessary when the movement is fairly basic. Still, I can see why Seiko included one here. There's something quite nice about being able to see the mechanical heart of your watch ticking away, especially if you're new to automatic watches.

The Blue Moon also offers 50 metres of water resistance. That's perfectly reasonable for a dressier watch, although it's certainly not something I'd choose for swimming or spending time around water. That's what my dive watches are for!

Is the Seiko Presage Blue Moon Worth Buying?

For me, the Seiko Presage Blue Moon SRPB41J1 is a fantastic choice if you're looking for an affordable automatic dress watch with a little something special about it.

I spend most of my time wearing sports and tool watches, so I wanted something smarter that I could reach for when the occasion called for it. The Blue Moon fits that role perfectly, although I think it's versatile enough to wear more often than just on special occasions.

It's not without its compromises. The 4R35 movement is fairly basic, the bracelet can be a little awkward to adjust, and that polished case isn't going to hide every mark. But none of those things takes away from what makes this watch so enjoyable.

For me, it's all about that wonderful blue dial. The way it plays with the light gives this watch far more character than you might expect at this price point. I also love how easily you can change its appearance with a leather strap, which is how I prefer wearing mine.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. If you appreciate a beautiful dial, reliable automatic movement and a watch that feels just as comfortable with a shirt as it does with something more casual, the Blue Moon is well worth considering.

It's a lovely reminder that you don't have to spend a fortune to enjoy something special on your wrist.
