Retro Cartoon fun from Undone

Introducing the very limited edition Popeye & friends box set from Undone! Undone are well known in the watch industry for their colourful collection of designs and limited-run pieces. Not to mention their ability to customise most of their range to their customer’s preferences has, in my opinion, put them at the forefront of affordable individual watches today.

This latest release celebrates the golden era of vintage cartoons with the Popeye & Friends theme. It comprises three pieces, the man himself, Popeye and his arch-enemy Brutus and finally, the cause of most of their disagreements, the lovely Olive Oly. The box set of all three, including a collectors box and limited edition framed artwork, is limited to just 50 sets worldwide, so it really will be a sought after collectors set if you are one of the chosen few. These sets will be offered to a very select few collectors and industry leaders who will receive a password to purchase the set online.

Fear not though, because if you're not one of the chosen, you can purchase the non-box set versions separately, although even these individual versions are a limited run. Both the Popeye and Brutus pieces feature a Seiko NH35 automatic movement, and the Olive Oly features the Seiko VH61 quartz movement. All three watches feature see-through case backs with their name printed in the era's standard cartoon font. In terms of water resistance, Brutus comes in at a depth defying 200m, with Popeye coming in second at 100m and finally Olive at 30m. The choice of crystals is also different across all three, with Brutus getting a sapphire to match the increase in water resistance and Popeye getting a domed acrylic crystal. In contrast, Olive gets a hardened K1 mineral crystal.

In terms of the looks, the Popeye piece is a bronze cased watch with a rotating bezel and a striking blue dial with Popeye, of course, at the centre, using his arms to mark the time. Brutus is a more complex look in a more modern style with a blue and black colour scheme to the case and bezel and a skeleton dial with Brutus again at the centre marking the time. Finally, we have Olive Oly, and this is specifically aimed towards the ladies and features a rose gold plated case at 34mm and a mother of pearl dial. Olive is at the centre to mark the time with her arms, and this is the only piece in the collection to feature a leather strap.

As a set with the limited edition collectors case and framed artwork, this is a very attractive package, and in such limited numbers, I’m sure the new owners will be thrilled to have these in their collections. Individually though, each of these pieces is also very fun to own and wear, so I think these will be a big hit across the watch community. All three have very different characters and styles, so it will be interesting to see which ones turn out to be the most popular.
